Potholes and Joe Biden’s ‘poor’ memory | UK News
After last Thursday’s delving into the pervasive issue of potholes, on Britain’s roads, one reader thinks its not the SUVs. Could it be the perpetual cycle of digging and poor quality filling exacerbates the problem and bad weather?
Meanwhile, readers Joe Biden’s impassioned defense of his memory. At 81, he’s older than former president Ronald Reagan was when he finished his term aged 77.
Is it ageist to doubt his abilities to complete another four years, or entirely reasonable given that he continuously gets wrong what he’s supposed to say? Remember, Rashid Sanook?

It’s not just SUVs…
What’s with this war on SUVs (MetroTalk, Thu)? Apparently they cause the potholes, but why not mention HGVs and buses?
Surely they are the main cause, or perhaps its the utility companies that dig up roads then fill them in, only for the same stretch to be dug up again.
Also, the quality of this work is often very poor – as are repairs to potholes, which are also caused by the weather. Haven’t you noticed that after snow and ice, potholes appear in abundance? James Florenzo, London
Should Biden give it up?
When the leader of the free world, US president Joe Biden, struggles to recall key life events and remember the names of world leaders, it’s time for him to retire.
Instead of being permitted to run for another four-year term, the 81-year-old should be thanked for his service and told to put his feet up. Scott, West London
Labour has retracted its pledge to spend £28billion on the environment (Metro, Fri).
I hope whoever wins the general election gets more big businesses to finance environmental issues, because their business depends on the public buying their products. Fay, London.
Harris (MetroTalk, Fri) asserts that the internet is not going anywhere.
Are you sure? Aside from human sabotage, could it simply just be switched back on after a solar storm such as the Carrington Event in 1859?Daniel, Stanmore
Are we worse off because we pursued academia?
Roger Smith (MetroTalk, Fri) is another person blaming people living longer for the pension crisis.
It has nothing to do with that. Since the mid-1980s, to curb unemployment and make government figures look better, young people were encouraged to go to university – which, until then, had been the domain of clever people.
Now, Joe Bloggs and the world can go. So instead of leaving school at 16, paying income tax towards pensions, they go to university for three or four years and run up debt, which most will not have to pay back as they will end up in call centres with useless degrees, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill. Fred, Hampshire
Defence of the realm and aircraft procurement are important matters.
Aircraft carriers with complete air groups are essential for defending British interests worldwide, but the uncomfortable truth is RAF support for naval aviation remains lukewarm.
Note its preference for combat jets unsuitable for carrier operations, failure to procure sufficient F-35B aircraft, the delay standing up 809 Naval Air Squadron, and shocking delays in training naval aviators. There are budget concerns, of course, but the RAF decides procurement priorities – carrier combat aircraft first, surely, ahead of the Red Arrows and nine other RAF display teams.
History makes clear naval aviation should be controlled by the Royal Navy. The RAF is best not involved. Lester May (Lieutenant Commander RN – Retired), London
Brenda Dean (MetroTalk, Fri) says critics of the Labour left should be reminded who introduced the NHS, paid holidays, sick pay and weekends.
I gather the NHS was the idea of a cross-party committee led by William Beveridge, a Liberal. Paid holidays came in 1938. Statutory Sick Pay came in 1983. The weekend was invented in Manchester during the 19th century. Paul, London
As a serial love cheat, I want to say a huge thank you to the politicians at the Covid Inquiry who have proved my claim that it’s entirely reasonable to delete all your WhatsApp messages despite promising you wouldn’t. Graham, Via Email
