Queen Camilla has spoken out for the first time since King Charles was diagnosed with cancer.

The queen said her husband is doing ‘extremely well under the circumstances’ after learning of his ill health.

Camilla was in good spirits as she arrived at a special ceremony to celebrate the work of charities at Sailsbury Cathedral tonight.

Despite the royal family going through tough times, Camilla continued to put on a brave face and among the first people she met were medical staff from Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

Ben Abbott, 40, a critical care paramedic, told her: ‘I do hope His Majesty is doing well Ma’am, we’re all really sad to hear the news.’

‘Well, he’s doing extremely well under the circumstances,’ the 76-year-old replied.

‘He’s very touched by all the letters and the messages the public have been sending from everywhere – that’s very cheering.’

Camilla left Charles at Sandringham to fulfil royal engagements tonight and was pictured smiling as she greeted those in attendance.

The pair were pictured in a car leaving Clarence House on Tuesday after meeting with Prince Harry for around 45 minutes.

It comes after the king himself broke his silence yesterday with a statement to mark Grenada’s 50th anniversary of independence.

His eldest son Prince William said the family was ‘grateful’ for the public support they have received in recent weeks.

‘We really appreciate everyone’s kind messages,’ he said at a London Air Ambulance charity event last night.

‘I’d like to take this opportunity to say thank you for the kind messages of support for Catherine and for my father, especially in recent days,’ he said during a brief speech.

‘It means a great deal to us all. It’s fair to say the past few weeks have had a rather “medical” focus. So I thought I’d come to an air ambulance function to get away from it all.

‘But, seriously, we gather tonight to help as many people as possible benefit from top class care in the silhouette of London’s Air Ambulance’s flying lifelines.’

On Monday, Buckingham Palace said Charles ‘remains wholly positive about his treatment’ and ‘looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible’.

‘His Majesty has commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,’ a palace spokesman said.

‘Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

‘His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.’
