Two teenage girls aged just 13 and 14 have been arrested after a Jewish woman was the victim of a ‘violent robbery’ in Haringey, North London.

The woman, 20, was approached by two girls on Rostrevor Avenue, a small residential street south of the South Tottenham tube station, who assaulted her and stole her bag at about 4.30pm on Thursday.

The Metropolitan Police arrested two teenagers at about midday yesterday at an address in Haringey, which has a growing strictly Orthodox Jewish population.

Officers had combed CCTV footage which suggested the girls were wearing school uniforms, coordinating with local school administrators to identify them.

The victim suffered bruising and while she did not need hospital treatment, she was, the Met said, ‘understandably very shaken by the incident’.

Detective Sergeant Asli Benson, who has led the investigation, said today the force is treating the incident as a ‘possible hate crime’.

‘The victim is from the orthodox Jewish community,’ she said.

‘It would have been obvious from her appearance that she was Jewish and there has been significant concern that she was targeted for that reason.

‘In the current climate, when fears and uncertainty in the wider Jewish community are heightened following the terror attacks in Israel and the subsequent rise in antisemitic hate crime here in London, these concerns are entirely understandable.’
