A Russian cargo plane used to send goods between Russia and China caught fire after one of its engines exploded.

The Tu-204 aircraft was flying from Baikal Airport in Ulan-Ude, Russia, to Zhangzhou, China, when the incident happened.

The aircraft dumped fuel and made an emergency landing with one engine, according Alexey Tsydenov, head of the Buryatia region.

There were five crew members on board and no one was injured.

A woman who witnessed the explosion called Lyubov Pichueva said: ‘I heard a powerful explosion coming from above.

‘At first I thought it was fireworks, but the sound was too strange.

‘It was very scary.’

The aircraft landed at 8.30am local time today.

There were five people on board the plane and no one was injured

It is used to send goods between Russia and China ever since Western sanctions were imposed on Russia as a result of the war in Ukraine.

The East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office has now launched an investigation into the explosion.

There has been 120 air accidents in Russia involving civil aircraft operated by Russian airlines in the first eight months of this year.

Despite fewer flights taking off this is more than double the number in recent years.

Russia is currently subject to a ‘red flag’ by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
