Alex Murdaugh smirks as he gets plea deal for 101 financial crimes | US News
Disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh pleaded guilty to a total of 101 counts of financial crimes.
Murdaugh, 55, accepted a plea deal for embezzling over $8.8million of his clients’ funds while working as a prominent personal injury attorney in his home state of South Carolina.
Prosecutors asked Judge Clifton Newman for a 27-year prison sentence as part of the plea deal. A final sentence will be determined at a hearing on November 28.
Murdaugh is currently serving two life sentences for killing his wife, Margaret, and his son, Paul, at his country estate in 2021.
He was found guilty of murder after a high profile jury trial in March.
Murdaugh has previously admitted to committing the financial crimes, but continues to deny involvement in the murders.
In September, Murdaugh pleaded guilty to 22 more federal financial crimes, including wire fraud, bank fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy.
