Philippines radio presenter shot dead as he live streamed Facebook show | World News

Juan Jumalon was shot dead

A radio presenter has been shot dead while his programme was being streamed live on Facebook.

57-year-old Juan Jumalon was broadcasting from his home studio in the town of Calamba in the Philippines when the gunman gained entry by pretending to be a listener.

The gunman shot Mr Jumalon twice before stealing his gold necklace and fleeing on a motorcycle with a companion, local police said.

Officers are investigating and want to find out if the attack was work related.

A video of the attack shows news presenter Mr Jumalon pausing and looking at something away from the camera before two shots ring out. He then slumps back in his chair as music continues to play in the background.

He was pronounced dead on the way to hospital.

The attacker wasn’t caught on camera during the Facebook livestream but police are searching Mr Jumalon’s home and neighbouring properties for security cameras.

The Philippines has long been regarded as one of the most dangerous places for journalists in the world.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr strongly condemned the shooting and said he has ordered the national police to track down, arrest and prosecute the killers.

‘Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions,’ he said in a statement.

The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines, a press freedom watchdog, said Mr Jumalon was the 199th journalist to be killed in the country since 1986, when democracy returned after a ‘People Power’ uprising toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos, the father of the current president, and forced him and his family into US exile.

‘The attack is even more condemnable since it happened at Mr Jumalon’s own home, which also served as the radio station,’ the watchdog said.
