Cornish town of Bude’s Sainsbury’s car park tunnel is a hit again | UK News
The UK is home to some of the world’s top tourist spots, attracting countless visitors from every corner of the globe.
But one of the best reviewed may come as a surprise to many sightseers – a plastic supermarket tunnel designed to protect shoppers and trolleys from the elements.
And the tongue in cheek ‘attraction’ in the seaside town of Bude, Cornwall, might prove more popular than ever after TripAdviser lifted a ban on new comments.
The Bude Tunnel is a 70 metre perspex underpass which offers an ‘open to the public free-of-charge walk from Sainsbury’s car park to Crooklets Road’.
It was previously voted the town’s top attraction in 2018 and may now be on the way to reclaiming that crown.
The travel review website goes on to say that it allows people to complete the journey ‘completely undercover, protected from the elements whilst maintaining your view to the spectacular surroundings of Bude’.
The website also boasts that ‘nowhere else in Bude can you walk this far undercover in a continuous straight line’.
It notes ‘all ages are welcome’.

The tunnel has approximately 1328 reviews so far and is rated number five out of 34 things to do in the Cornish town.
One visitor branded it a ‘must see’ in their five out of five review.
Reviewer NicG meanwhile said it was ‘just a sight to behold’
He added: ‘This curved, transparent structure captured the beauty of the raindrops – a natural, external feature – which, due to refraction, gave us a beautiful view of many objects standing, in the cold wind, just outside of the tunnel.’
One guest even said it was better than visiting the stunning North Pole and exotic Madagascar.
Trip Adviser previously banned reviews of the structure after doubting some of the claims that were being made by visitors.
One seasoned jet-setter added: ‘Words can’t possibly express that magnificence, although I will try here.
‘After many travels and witnessing many of the marvels of Europe and the North American continent, nothing quite prepared me for the sheer beauty and simplicity of the Bude Tunnel.
‘It needs no turrets, or columns, or architectural flourishes of any kind – the perfect curve of the arch is all you need.’
However not all the tongue in cheek reviews were as flattering as others.
One said: ‘Fantastic shelter from attacking seagulls when walking back to the car with a takeaway sandwich from Sainsbury’s.’
However the user did give it five out of five for this alone.
Bude’s other top rated attractions are a little more what a visitor might expect of the south west.
These include an open air sea pool, a slip and slide for children and some stunning beaches and coastlines.
