A long-awaited WhatsApp feature has finally been announced | Tech News

WhatsApp users with two accounts will soon be able to switch between them on a single phone.

Writing on Facebook today, CEO of WhatsApp owner Meta Mark Zuckerberg announced the new feature enabling two accounts to be logged in at once.

‘Switch between two accounts on WhatsApp – soon you’ll be able to have two WhatsApp accounts on one phone within the app,’ he said.

Until now, users with more than one account, such as a personal WhatsApp and work profile, have needed to use two phones.

The new feature will be rolling out to Android users in the coming weeks, with a release for iOS to be confirmed.

A further statement from Meta added: ‘Today, we’re introducing the ability to have two WhatsApp accounts logged in at the same time. Helpful for switching between accounts – such as your work and personal – now you no longer need to log out each time, carry two phones or worry about messaging from the wrong place.’

The company also warned users to be aware of spoof WhatsApp apps.

‘Only use the official WhatsApp and don’t download imitations or fake versions as a way of getting more accounts on your phone,’ it said. ‘Your messages are only secure and private when using the official WhatsApp.’

How to add a second WhatsApp account

1. To set up a second account, you will need a second phone number and SIM card, or a phone that accepts multi-SIM or eSIM
2. Open your WhatsApp settings
3. Click on the arrow next to your name, and click ‘Add account’
4. You can control your privacy and notification settings on each account
