The mum-in-law of Scotland’s first minister was left in the middle of the street with her family as she feared being killed by a missile strike in Gaza.

Elizabeth El-Nakla called Humza Yousaf and his family to ‘say her goodbyes’ he said on the Laura Kuenssberg show this morning.

As he spoke on the BBC show his voice almost cracked as he told how at around 3am today, his mother-in-law called the family as she was scared of her relative’s house being attacked.

According to Mr Yousaf, it however turned out to be a false alarm.

He said he could ‘imagine the panic’ as her neighbours around her were told to leave their homes.

Mrs El-Nakla and her husband, Maged, travelled from Dundee to the Gaza Strip last week.

The Scottish first minister’s in-laws were visiting Maged’s ill 92-year-old mother and their son, Mohammad, who has an eight-week-old child.

Now the family are trapped within the Palestinian territory after Hamas, the militant group which governs Gaza, launched a surprise incursion Saturday.

In a tearful 40-second-long video to BBC News last week, Elizabeth said: ‘I am currently in Deir al-Balah with my husband’s family, my family, my grandchildren.’

Close to tears, she added: ‘We have no electricity. We have no water. The food we do have, which is little, will not last because there is no electricity and it will spoil.
