A man has received a box of six clay penises and has no idea why.

To add to the mystery, artist Dale Wells, 44, used to have a statue on display at the Turntable Gallery in Grimsby, but the penis was constantly stolen, seven times in fact.

The sender seems to think they are the statue’s missing penises but because they are made of clay Dale thinks otherwise.

Nevertheless he was delighted to receive the box and said: ‘To get the box of dicks was quite exciting.

‘We turned up today and someone had handed the box to a security guard that works next door, because our shutters were down.

‘There was a biscuit tin full of straw, which had some prototype penises in them.

‘There’s a note attached that says their grandfather has passed on the penises to them.

‘We were quite surprised to be honest, it’s quite a rare find.

‘But we were quite overjoyed because people are really invested in the statue.

‘I don’t think they are the ones that have been stolen, but I think they are ones that have been made as prototypes.

‘There’s a lot of different styles and shapes.’

Vandalism of the statue got so bad at one point it had to wear everything from nappies to tutus and had to be moved away from display.

Dale said: ‘People used to dress the statue up for matchdays, it once had a pink sari around him and a pink tutu and all sorts of thing.

‘But his penis was quite popular and people would often tear them off, so there’s been about three or four versions of them.’

Dale wants the person who donated the penises to come forward and reveal their identity.

He added: ‘I don’t know what we’ll be do with them – they could form part of an exhibition.

‘It would be great if they came forward and wanted to be part of the show.

‘It’s quite a funny story and it’s captured a lot of people’s imaginations.’
