Tallest skyscraper in the US could be built in unexpected city | US News

A building that would be the tallest skyscraper in the US and the fifth highest in the world is being planned in a city that some may least expect.

Real estate developers behind the project were not content with constructing the second-tallest building in America and submitted a ‘request for variance’ to increase the height from 1,750 feet to 1,907 feet tall, stated the architecture firm AO in late January.

The structure that includes four towers is not proposed in New York City, Chicago or another city famous for its skyline. Instead, Matteson Capital and AO are looking to erect the record-breaker in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Currently, the tallest tower in the US is One World Trade Center in New York City, at 1,776 feet.

Three of the towers of the proposed development would be 345 feet tall, while the fourth ‘Legends Tower’ would reach 1,907 feet and create ‘an impressive silhouette against the Oklahoma City skyline’, stated AO.

‘The symbolic height honors the year that Oklahoma was admitted as the 46th state of the United States,’ stated the firm.

Called The Boardwalk at Bricktown, the mixed-use development is drawn up to include a Hyatt hotel with 350 rooms and 100 serviced condos in the Legends Tower, a Dream Hotel by Hyatt with 85 serviced condos in the Dream Tower, 1,776 residential units from market rate to luxury, and retail and restaurant spaces.

‘Oklahoma City is experiencing a significant period of growth and transformation, making it well-positioned to support large-scale projects like the one envisioned for Bricktown,’ stated Matteson Capital CEO Scot Matteson.

‘We believe that this development will be an iconic destination for the city, further driving the expansion and diversification of the growing economy, drawing in investment, new businesses, and jobs.’

The tallest structure standing in Oklahoma is the Devon Energy Center at 844 feet, meaning the supertall Legends Tower would dramatically change the skyline.

However, the ambitious project will likely need to clear more than one hurdle. Oklahoma City spokeswoman Kristy Yager said the developers need to ‘rezone, not seek a variance’.

‘We understand the applicant’s representative is preparing a new SPUD (Simplified Planned Unit Development) application,’ Yager told the Oklahoma City Free Press, ‘Which would go to Planning Commission for a recommendation and City Council for a final decision.’
