A drink driver decided it would be a good idea to stop for a nap right in the middle of a dual carriageway.

Emmanuel Osei was found asleep at the wheel of his Mercedes C220 on the A130 in Godmanchester in Cambridgeshire.

As he was parked in the middle of the carriageway, police initially thought he had broken down, but they soon realised he was actually sleeping.

The 34-year-old had his seatbelt on at the time and the engine of the car was still running.

Footage shared by Cambridgeshire Constabulary shows an officer asking him if he had been drinking.

A roadside breath test gave a reading of 47 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, which is over the legal limit of 35. A second reading in custody gave 42.

Osei, of Maple Drive, Huntingdon, appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on January 29, pleading guilty to drink driving.

He was disqualified from driving for three years and six months and ordered tocarry out 120 hours unpaid work within the next year.

PC Neil Game, from the road policing team at Cambridgeshire Constabulary, said: ‘Osei put himself and other road users at huge risk, not only by drink driving, but also stopping for a rest on a dual carriageway.

‘There is absolutely no excuse for drink driving and if you are tired you should pull over in a layby or at a service station to take a break.’
