UK faces ‘three seasons’ of weather this week from spring heat to winter snow | UK News
The United Kingdom is set to face a rollercoaster of weather conditions this week, ranging from 16°C spring heat to autumnal floods, then winter whiteouts.
After this weekend’s balmy temperatures, highs are set to hit 15°C today, but floods could follow beginning tomorrow into Wednesday.
It comes as parts of Britain are already being battered by nearly seven inches of rain, with a warning for downpours in western Scotland ending today.
Tomorrow, the midlands and northern England will face flood warnings, followed by snow flurries beginning Wednesday in the north.
Netweather forecaster Nick Finnis said: ‘Don’t get used to the mild weather and think spring has arrived – winter is about to bite back.’
The switch in weather is caused by the weekend’s tropical system being replaced by Atlantic deluges, then frigid Arctic weather moving in.
The north is due to seefour and five degree daytime highs from Wednesday, with the south and midlands set for chilly 6-7°C peaks from Saturday into next week.
A Met Office forecaster said: ‘Wet and windy weather moves southeast on Tuesday, but Wednesday becomes colder from the north, with rain on Thursday perhaps turning wintry in the north.
‘Accumulations will be over high ground but also with a threat at lower levels. Through the weekend a change towards a north or north-westerly wind brings cold conditions spreading across the UK, with wintry showers across coasts.’
MetDesk said: ‘A very wet few days are ahead.’
The Environment Agency warned: ‘Local river and surface water flooding is possible on Tuesday and Wednesday for parts of the west midlands and north of England.
‘Land, roads and some properties may flood and there may be travel disruption.’
According to WXCharts, an interactive weather map provider using Met Office data, the UK will be coldest on February 10.
Temperatures looks set to plunge to -8°C in areas of Scotland and Wales.
In its long-range forecast, the Met Office has said there will be some hill snow over the weekend and that ‘there is a chance colder conditions could start to feature’ in the second week of February.
