Two fossil hunters rescued after getting trapped in deep mud | UK News

Two fossil hunters had to be rescued after getting stuck in deep mud on the Jurassic Coast within two hours of each other.

The coastguard was called to Charmouth Bay in Dorset at around 1.45pm yesterday to reports of a person looking for fossils trapped in the mud.

They helped free the individual, but just over two hours later the rescue teams received another call, this time with reports a fossil hunter was stuck near the mouth of the River Char.

Photos show a young man, whose identity is unknown, with one leg trapped in the mud, before rescuers use compressed air to loosen it and remove him.

It’s believed he’d been stuck for over an hour.

Lyme Regis Coastguard said both people were safely rescued and checked over by ambulance crews as a precaution.

The rescues came after a huge cliff collapse just down the coast on East Beach at West Bay on Monday.

Despite the landslide, dozens of people were spotted on the beach on Friday.

The National Coastwatch Institution spokesperson said the latest rescues should ‘remind members of the public to keep clear of mudslides’.

They added: ‘Whilst the surface may form a firm crust in dry weather, it will not be strong enough to hold a person’s weight and the mud will be soft underneath.

‘When falling into the mud it can create a suction and draw the body in deeper.’

Last week a major railway line into London was hit with a massive landslide that destroyed a section of the track.

The 150ft landslip happened on an embankment near Hook, Hampshire, affecting services to and from Basingstoke.
