Moment ‘drunk’ teenager mows down man and wife who told him not to drive | UK News
This is the shocking moment a ‘clearly intoxicated’ teenager ploughed his car into a husband and wife who told him he shouldn’t be driving.
Colin and Claire Winters were walking home from a meal out in Oldham, Greater Manchester, when they noticed Joshua Bunn ‘staggering across’ a car park.
The couple had stopped so Mrs Winters could change her shoes and watched in disbelief as Bunn, then 19, stumbled to his car and got behind the wheel.
Mr Winters approached the teenager and told him he ‘shouldn’t be drinking and driving’ before walking away.
But terrifying footage showed Bunn smashing into him from behind, sending him flying to the ground.
Bunn then immediately reversed aggressively, mounted the kerb and sped towards the couple, narrowly missing Mr Winters but hitting his wife with serious force.
She was ‘somewhat miraculously’ thrown through a ‘small gap’ in the wall at the car park Radcliffe Street, Royton, and not crushed against it, a court heard.
After mowing down the pair, Bunn then fled the scene at speed shortly after midnight on September 19, 2020.
Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court heard how it was a ‘miracle’ that Mrs Winters wasn’t seriously injured or even killed.
Her husband, a trainee doctor, also escaped with minor injuries and neither of them required hospital treatment.
Five days after the incident, Bunn was arrested.
The court heard he had attempted to conceal evidence of the assault by getting the car repaired.
He initially claimed he had been attacked by Mr Winters before ‘blacking out’ and had ‘no recollection’ of what followed.
Bunn admitted drinking two bottles of beer, but denied being drunk or on drugs.
In her victim impact statement, Mrs Winters said the attack had ‘terrified’ her.
She said: ‘When the car reversed I remember thinking: ‘This is it. I am going to die; my daughter is going to wake up in the morning without her mummy and for what?”’
The court heard that at the time of the attack Bunn had no previous convictions, but was convicted of an unrelated charge of drink-driving in 2022.
Keith Harrison, mitigating, said Bunn, now 22, had a ‘background of childhood trauma’ having been ‘kidnapped’ at the age of 15.
He suffers from anxiety and depression and was also ‘deficient in his ability to resolve conflict situations’. Bunn felt ‘genuine remorse’ for his actions, the court heard.
Mr Harrison said: ‘That may be small comfort, but it’s better than someone who shows complete disregard for his action.’
Recorder Nathan Moxon said Mrs Winters was ‘fortunate not to have been pinned against the wall’. He added: ‘We have all watched the CCTV footage. It is terrifying.
‘It is a miracle there were not more significant injuries. Had there not been a gap in the wall, death would have been foreseeable.’
Addressing Bunn, Recorder Moxon said: ‘You acted with anger against a person who set out to protect the public by advising you not to drive.’
Bunn, of Windmill Close, Royton, was jailed for four years and seven months after he pleaded guilty to actual bodily harm, dangerous driving, and attempted grievous bodily harm.
He was also banned from driving for five years – two years of which will be served after his release from prison.
Bunn must also take an extended driving test if he wishes to get back behind the wheel once his ban has expired.
Earlier this month, a 23-year-old student was found guilty of murdering her fiancé after running him over with her car and dragging him 500ft down the road.
