Donald Trump accuser says he was ‘like an emperor without clothes’ | US News
Columnist E Jean Carroll, who claimed that the former president raped her and destroyed her reputation by labeling her a liar, vowed to put the money toward ‘something Donald Trump hates’.
‘If it’ll cause him pain for me to give money to certain things, that’s my intent,’ Carroll told George Stephanopoulos on Good Morning America on Monday, three days after the jury decided that Trump had to pay her.
Carroll suggested that she intended to create a ‘fund for the women who have been sexually assaulted by Donald Trump’.
Speaking for the first time since the verdict, Carroll said that she was not able to sleep, eat, or think straight in the days leading up to the trial. However, her fears of facing Trump and sitting feet away from him in the courtroom disappeared soon after the five-day trial started.
‘It was like he was like nothing, like an emperor without clothes,’ said Carroll. ‘All my terror leading up to it, and there he is. He’s just something in a suit.’
Carroll uttered the same line on CNN This Morning, and added that it was ‘like looking at nothing. It was like, nothing’. She said she realized that Trump’s power seemed to come from people around him who give him attention.
Without that attention, Carroll said on Good Morning America, he seemed to have ‘no power’ and ‘he was zero’.
A jury including seven men and two women reached a verdict in less than three hours. Trump stormed out of the New York courtroom during the closing argument by Carroll’s lawyer, Roberta Kaplan, and was not present at the time that the ruling was issued.
Carroll smiled as the verdict was read, as it exceeded the minimum $10million she was seeking.
‘The elation was so great on Friday, it filled me up,’ Carroll said. ‘It was almost painful.’
Trump shortly after the judgement stated that it was ‘absolutely ridiculous’ and that ‘our legal system is out of control, and being used as a political weapon’.
Carroll, 80, sued Trump, 77, in November 2019 after he denied raping her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s.
