A man died when he ‘fell down a hole’ after safety barriers were ‘totally blown over’ by Storm Isha.

Emergency services were called to Highgate Road in Bradford, West Yorkshire around 7:20 this morning after reports of a ‘concern for safety.’

The victim, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene after he is thought to have fallen down a hole that was caused by roadworks.

Residents today told of their shock after they heard about the man’s death.

One local, who wished to be anonymous, said: ‘They closed the road off at 7.30am this morning.

‘I was just expecting it to be a crash, but I was shocked when I heard it was a pedestrian.

‘All the bollards have totally blown over, and a gentleman’s fallen down a hole.’

Another local said: ‘It might have been a freak accident. It’s really sad.’

One neighbour said: ‘I heard the sirens and saw all the police, so I presumed it was some sort of incident. That road (Back Lane) is blocked off with all the works. It’s sad what’s happened.’

The Met Office has issued a danger of life warning and told people to be aware of beach material and debris being thrown onto the air.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious.

They said: ‘At 7.19am officers were called by the ambulance service to reports of a concern for safety at Highgate Road, Queensbury.

‘A man was pronounced dead at the scene. The man’s death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner in due course.’

A West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson also said they were called to the scene after ‘reports of a concern for safety.’

They said: ‘We sent two crews from Odsal to assist colleagues from West Yorkshire Police and Yorkshire Ambulance Service.’
