A powerful storm bringing 85mph winds that could put lives at risk is barrelling through Britain only days after the nation was frozen stiff.

Very few parts of the UK are not under a Met Office weather warning today, with up to 100mm of rain set to drench Scotland as Storm Isha threatens to cause havoc the length and breadth of the country.

Three amber wind warnings are in place for most of England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

But the amber alerts – the second highest that can be issued by the weather agency – on top of five yellow warnings signal just how severe Storm Isha might be.

Storm Isha, the second named storm to slam into the UK this year, is expected to leave some residents without power or phone signal, damage railways and submerge homes in floodwater.

Powerful winds crashing into coastal areas may fling debris into the air, posing a ‘danger to life’, the Met Office says.

The service says it’s ‘relatively rare’ for the entire UK to be under weather warnings.

‘It’s a very widespread storm,’ said Met Office forecaster Ellie Glaisyer, ‘and it’s going to be affecting everybody.’
