New homeowners who were cleaning out the house they recently purchased discovered a severed human head in a freezer.

The homeowners were going through leftover belongings at the home in Grand Junction, Colorado, on Friday when they came across a bag containing possible human remains inside a deep freezer, KREX reported.

They contacted the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office and deputies responded to the home on the 2900 block of Pinyon Avenue around 2.30pm.

Authorities confirmed that the grisly discovery in the front yard was a human head.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the case as a possible homicide. The remains have not been identified.

Officials believe it was an isolated incident and said there is no threat to the community.

‘This is still an active and ongoing investigation, so there are no other details that can be released… but as soon as we have information, we will put it out there,’ stated sheriff’s office spokeswoman Wendy Likes.

‘We want to make sure that someone doesn’t find out their loved one has passed away through rumors and innuendo.’

A neighbor said the new homeowners had made a post online for people to pick up ‘free stuff’ that had been left there and that the deep freezer was among the items left by the garage.

‘As they were cleaning it out to pack it up, there was a black bag. They opened the bag, and a human head fell out,’ the unidentified neighbor told Western Slope Now.

The neighbor added that the previous tenants were a mother and her son, who left the same day the home was sold.

‘As far as I can gather, the gentleman was taking care of his mom,’ said the neighbor. ‘They never really had many people over.’

Neither the new nor the old homeowners have been identified.

Pinyon Avenue is in central Grand Junction, which is in the Western Slope region of the state.

The human head was uncovered just over a month after out-of-town family members visiting a relative in San Diego, California, three days before Christmas found a body stuffed in a freezer. The body was identified as belonging to an 81-year-old woman who was believed to have been missing or dead for up to nine years.
