Man who leapt over bench at judge returns to court heavily restrained | US News
A man who lunged over a bench and attacked a judge in the middle of his sentencing returned to court – but heavily restrained.
Deobra Delone Redden, 30, launched himself at Clark County Judge Mary Kay Holthus last week after she denied him bail and could be heard saying in a viral video, ‘Nah, f*** that, bitch.’ The judge appeared to fall from her chair to the ground as Redden pummeled her and was pulled off by several men.
On Monday morning, Redden was escorted back into the courtroom in Las Vegas for his sentencing hearing wearing a spit hood, orange mittens and shackles.
Redden did not utter a word as he was flanked by marshals in the courtroom.
Holthus, 62, who was not able to sentence Redden last Wednesday after he ‘supermanned over the judicial bench’, finished doing so this time around.
In the hearing that lasted only a few minutes, Holthus said of Redden’s sentence for a baseball bat assault from April: ‘For purposes of the record, I want to make it clear that I am not changing or modifying the sentence I was in the process of imposing last week before I was interrupted by defendant’s actions.’
Holthus sentenced Redden to 19-to-48 months in prison and imposed a few hundred dollars in administrative fees.
However, Redden is not getting away without facing repercussions for the attack. He is slated to return to court on Tuesday to face charges in connection to attacking Holthus, but before a different judge.
Last week, Redden had begged Holthus not to sentence him to time behind bars. He claimed he was ‘a person who never stops trying to do the right thing no matter how hard it is’.
‘I’m not a rebellious person,’ he said at the time. ‘But if it’s appropriate for you, then you have to do what you have to do.’
But Holthus did not grant Redden’s request for probation in light of his long rap sheet. She had her hair pulled and head slammed against the wall and received medical treatment, but returned to work the next day.
Redden later said he was having a bad day and was attempting to kill the judge, stated court records obtained by KLAS.
‘Judge has it out for me,’ he was quoted telling officers. ‘Judge is evil.’
