Manchester city centre has been overrun with a giant puddle nicknamed ‘Lake Primark’ after the area was battered by Storm Henk on Tuesday.

The newly-formed lake, also known as the ‘Market Street Canal’, came after hours of downpours caused the busy shopping street in the heart of the city to flood.

However, the storm did little to dampen the spirits of Mancunians, who as residents of ‘the rainy city’ are well accustomed to such downpours.

A picture of the puddle was posted on Twitter by @PrestwichBlue shortly after the flooding, which was captioned: ‘Market Street tonight. Not sure whether I need the tram or a lifeboat.’

User @A_Krystopher hilariously responded: ‘Market Street really went and said “New Year New Me” holy ****”.’

Meanwhile, @DanAtPlace posted: ‘Nowhere does puddles quite like Manchester. Lake Primark on Market Street is the best I’ve seen today.’

Also sharing a picture of the almighty puddle, @rmillerstott posted: ‘The River Market Street’, while @RoreyS quipped: ‘Welcome to the Market St Canal.’

Despite being famed for its famously wet weather, in reality Manchester doesn’t even crack the top 10 when it comes to the wettest places in Britain.

A recent study revealed Cardiff to be Britain’s wettest city with 1,152mm falling in the Welsh capital each year.

Manchester comes in at 15th place behind Belfast and Leeds, recording just 87mm of rain per year.

Nevertheless, a number of flood alerts were put in place across Greater Manchester this week amid heavy rainfall warnings with residents told to ‘be prepared’.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning in place throughout the region, warning of heavy downpours.
