Boy sobbed when he opened B&M Christmas gift and found pile of junk | UK News

An entire family was left in tears on Christmas Day after a four-year-old boy opened his main present only to find the box filled with a pile of rubbish.

Nathan Watters was excited to watch his son Peter rip into what he thought was a Hot Wheels racetrack he’d bought him from B&M.

But when the young lad unsealed the packaging, he discovered random junk inside, including coat hangers and broken photo frames.

Peter, his parents and younger sister all cried their eyes out when they realised what had happened.

‘I could see the disappointment and Christmas being ripped out of him,’ said Nathan.

‘He along with my wife immediately burst into tears quickly followed by myself and our three-year-old daughter.

‘The first thing he said was “My Hot Wheels, why has Santa done this? Is it because I’ve been naughty?”’

Nathan said the box showed no signs of damage and didn’t appear to have been tampered with when he bought the toy from the B&M store in his hometown of Neath in Wales.

He said: ‘The box itself was completely sealed of which we had made sure of from previous experiences where there’s been missing parts etc.

‘It was bought as our four-year-old son’s main gift as he’s been asking for it for months. We’re currently going through testing for autism with him which already runs in both sides of the family.

‘When he unwrapped it he was super excited and his face lit up. He asked me to help him and open it for him.

‘I opened the box which had no sign at all of tampering and as I opened the flap and saw what was in it, my heart sank. There was no way I could avoid tipping it out.’

After seeing the tat fall out, Nathan thought someone had returned the toy and box without the item inside.

But he said he has now been told by B&M that it was a manufacturing issue, although no explanation has been given as to how the rubbish ended up in the box instead of the toy.

The awful incident has left Nathan ‘feeling like the worst dad ever’ for ‘disappointing’ his son and not being able to do anything about it.

‘He was really upset all day, crying, asking why Santa left it, and couldn’t understand why it had happened,’ said Nathan. ‘We blamed it on a naughty elf who had tricked Santa.

‘When we put him to bed, the wife told him that Santa had called us and to take it to a shop to get it replaced – and that Santa had put the naughty elf responsible onto the naughty step to think about what he had done.’

B&M and Mattel, who own Hot Wheels, have been approached for comment and Nathan said staff at the store were ‘really sincere and apologetic’ when they took back the junk-filled box.

He added: ‘We returned to B&M this morning [Boxing Day] where the manager had already seen it on Facebook and made staff aware of the situation and instructed that we were either to have an exchange or a refund.

‘We exchanged it for a different track to what it was supposed to be and they also gave two packs of Hot Wheels cars to my son as a sorry gift.

‘The manager was also upset and stated that they checked all returns and that it was a manufacturing issue. We just want to make sure it doesn’t happen to anybody else as it has already, according to a comment on my Facebook post.’

Elsewhere, a dad has issued a warning after his son’s Christmas present burnt down the family home.

Another family’s Christmas was also left in tatters after Morrisons delivered turkey dinosaurs instead of meat, while Aldi is also recalling a popular aftershave gift over fears the bottles could shatter.
