Doctor in China punched woman ‘because she kept moving’ | World News
A doctor punched an 82-year-old woman in the face three times while surgery was performed on her eyes.
The shocking video is from 2019 from a hospital in Guigang, China, 300 miles west from Hong Kong.
Authorities are now investigating after it was circulated on social media.
The suspected surgeon has been suspended and the CEO of the hospital where the surgery was performed has been dismissed.
This decision was taken due to ‘serious violations of the group’s regulations’.
The video starts by the surgeon performing surgery before he suddenly lashes out, slams his fist down into the patient’s face once, and then less aggressively twice more.
The sheets covering the woman suddenly lurch up as she reacts to being hit.
Another medical worker comes over and seems unaware of what the surgeon has done.
Chinese doctor, Ai Fen, shared CCTV footage of it online to the social media platform Weibo.
Aier China, the hospital parent company, said the patient was punched because she wouldn’t stop moving.
The statement from the hospital says she moved her head and eyeballs multiple times, the BBC reported.
The doctor ‘treated the patient roughly in an emergency situation,’ the statement added because the patient only talked in a local dialect and did not respond to him.
The woman suffered bruises to her forehead.
Management paid 500 yuan (around £55) in compensation to the patient, according to her son.
The woman has been left blind in her left eye, but it is unclear if this was from the incident.
Hospital staff failed to report the incident to headquarters, Aier China said.
