A danger to life weather alert has been issued as Britain braces for 80mph winds this week.

The Met Office has warned the strong gales can produce large waves and throw debris onto sea front, coastal roads and properties.

Public transport will also be disrupted as millions prepare to travel for the festive period.

The North of England and Scotland are set to be the worst affected, with the 80mph gusts hurtling from Norway.

Other areas will also feel winds of 60mph and 70mph.

A yellow weather warning has been issued to cover Scotland, Northern Ireland, the North of England and parts of the East and West Midlands.

It will remain in place from the early hours of Thursday until midnight on Friday.
