Say goodbye to ad-free Netflix if you’re a new Sky customer – the company has now scrapped the streaming giant’s Basic service in its entertainment bundles.

Instead, Sky Stream, Sky Glass and Sky Q packages will include Netflix Standard with Ads.

The change was quietly introduced on December 12, following Netflix’s decision to scrap its Basic package last year.

It now offers three packages for UK customers – Standard with adverts, for £4.99 a month, Standard, for £10.99 a month, and Premium, for £17.99 a month.

New Sky Stream, Glass and Q customers will have Netflix Standard with Ads included in their package, with streaming for two devices.

However, they can upgrade to Netflix Standard for an additional £6 per month, or Netflix Premium with streaming for up to four devices, for £11 a month.

Existing Basic customers through either Netflix or Sky can continue using the service.

But on the bright side, Netflix’s new bottom-tier package actually offers better quality video than its predecessor. Netflix Standard with Ads runs at 1080p, compared to 720p resolution for Basic.

So even if your Christmas films are interrupted by those pesky ads, at least the picture quality either side of them will be better.

In another boon for viewers, the platform recently announced it had converted all customers to Dynamically Optimized (DO) HDR, which very simply put means watching films and TV shows in 4K will be easier, even if your broadband connection isn’t the speediest.

And whatever the connection, we’re still watching literally millions of hours of Netflix every year, as revealed last week by the platform’s first full set of viewing figures.
