New yellow wind warning joins amber rain alert as most of UK enjoys dry day | UK News
A new weather warning has been issued by the Met Office this morning despite the majority of the UK set to enjoy a calm and dry day.
A yellow warning for wind has been put in place in north east England, covering Middlesborough up to southern Scotland.
The new warning is in force from 9am on Sunday morning until 6pm, and the Met Office warns there will be ‘strong and gusty winds leading to some travel and infrastructure impacts’.
It joins two weather warnings already in place in north and west Scotland for rain. The overlapping warnings, one yellow and one amber, stretch from Inveraray in the south to cover almost the entire western Scottish coast.
The amber warning is in place until midnight, while the yellow warning runs until 6am on Monday.
The Met Office warns: ‘Persistent, heavy rain is likely to cause significant travel disruption and flooding.
‘A prolonged spell of heavy rain is likely to affect this area accompanied by strong southwesterly winds.
‘The heaviest rain will be focused on west-facing hills and here some places may see around 200mm of rainfall, whilst more generally 100-150mm of rain is likely.
‘This significant rainfall also has the potential to trigger shallow landslides and debris flows, most likely across the south of the Highland region and Argyll.’
Despite the unpleasant conditions in northern England and Scotland, the rest of the UK is set to have a fairly settled day.
A Met Office forecaster said: ‘Sunday’s weather will be very similar to Saturday. Largely cloudy, with heavy rain still affecting western Scotland, leading to the risk of some flooding here.
‘Very mild and staying windy in the north. Best of the brightness in the east.
‘Rain slowly edges southwards overnight, reaching mid Wales and the Midlands by dawn.
‘Drier and cooler conditions edging into northern Scotland. Mainly dry to the south, staying mild for many.’
