Gunfire was reported at the Frank and Estella Beam Hall housing the business school as well as the Student Union adjacent to it. The first 911 call was made at 11.45am on Wednesday, according to university police services director Adam Garcia.

‘There appears to be multiple victims at this time,’ wrote the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after noon. ‘Please avoid the area and we will have more information soon.’

‘Right now, we know there are three victims, but the extent of their injuries is unknown. That number could change,’ said Sheriff Kevin MacMahill.

Authorities have ‘no idea on a motive’ behind the shooting and there is ‘no further threat’ to the campus, McMahill said.

It was not immediately known if the suspect was shot dead by police or killed himself.

All the victims were rushed to nearby hospitals and their conditions were not known.

Classes and events at the university and all Nevada System of Higher Education institutions in the southern part of the state were closed for the rest of the day.

It happened just a day after a man shot a police officer at Northeast Early College High School in Austin, Texas, and went on a shooting rampage across the state that left at least six people dead.

The deadliest mass shooting in US history occurred in Las Vegas when a man opened fire from his hotel room onto the Harvest Music Festival on the Strip, killing 59 people and injuring more than 500 others.
