‘Starmer has destroyed Labour’s chances at the next general election’
As a staunch socialist, I have always had my doubts about Sir Keir Starmer and his socialist principles. Now that he has heaped praise on Margaret Thatcher, I’m afraid that ship has sailed. Trying to woo Tories to his side is a wasted exercise.
Instead, Starmer has hammered another nail into his political coffin and destroyed Labour’s chances at the next general election.
The only ‘red’ on show is on his cheeks, caused by embarrassment. Steve, Harrow

Interesting to see Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer is now wearing glasses. Perhaps they will help him see the damage the rail unions are doing to their industry?Bob, Hayes
In Monday’s MetroTalk, I suggested that the obscure Lib Dems bring back Nick Clegg as leader, because the Tories brought back David Cameron to keep them relevant.
Sir Keir Starmer took my hint and now praises Margaret Thatcher as his idol to woo Tory voters.
Will Labour now use an animated hologram of Mrs T as their new leader at their party conferences, like Abba did at their recent concerts? Trotter, London
‘David Cameron’s government – were ministers incompetent, lying or just very poor at maths?’
The government has promised to cut the number of migrants coming to the UK each year by 300,000 (Metro, Tue).
However, when the Conservative Party came to power 13 years ago under David Cameron, they said that they would allow only tens of thousands of migrants to come to the UK each year.
What happened? Were ministers incompetent, lying or just very poor at maths?Scott, West London
Rishi Sunak’s TV license hypocrisy
While prime minister Rishi Sunak is right to warn the profligate BBC over increasing its annual licence fee ‘tax’ again (Metro, Tue), it is somewhat hypocritical to do so because he says another £15-or-so a year is not ‘realistic’ for people to pay.
This is the same PM who is banning gas boilers from new homes in 2025, forcing expensive heat pumps on to homeowners; banning sales of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035, forcing the purchase of expensive electric vehicles, among other looming net-zero expenses; and not preventing myriad councils charging motorists daily to use the already highly taxed and paid-for King’s Highway. A reader recounts seeing King Charles at Brixton Market…
Linda Bliss (MetroTalk, Mon) made me chuckle when she said ‘I hope bookshops will display Omid Scobie’s Endgame book in the correct section – ie fiction, on the same shelf as the national railway timetables’.
I do know the trains are sometimes late etc but at least the timetables aren’t a fantasy like his book. I actually can’t believe the Dutch translation of Scobie’s book named King Charles and the Princess of Wales as the royals who allegedly had concerns about the skin colour of Harry and Meghan’s son, Archie.
Years ago I saw Charles in Brixton, which has a culturally rich and diverse population, and large groups of West Indian and African residents.
They absolutely loved him and Charles was loving the attention, shaking everyone’s hand with a big grin on his face.
I saw no trace of a racist human being that day but someone full of joy for his fellow humans. Beverley Smith, London
Paul (MetroTalk, Mon) claims that ‘racism occurs only if it’s deliberate on racial grounds’.
This means that if one is unconsciously biased then one is not being racist – a very convenient get-out-of-jail-free card for white supremacists.
Does non-deliberate sexism excuse the sexist or non-deliberate social snobbery excuse the social snob?
If the English legal system worked on the basis of this false premise, then people who kill others unintentionally would never be punished. Robert Bucknor, Tunbridge Wells
In the correspondence about whether people should be allowed to choose whether to smoke, I haven’t noticed the term ‘passive smoking’ used.
The damage caused by cigarette smoke to the lungs of non-smokers is a proven fact.
A dear family friend who died in his 70s of lung cancer was mega-fit for his age – a non-smoker, occasional drinker, avid walker and cyclist and conscious of his diet.
His death, we all thought, arose because he had worked for Air France among colleagues who chain-smoked Gauloises cigarettes. Helena Newton, Redbridge
