The Marapi volcano in Indonesia has erupted and killed at least 11 hikers, as a dozen remain still missing.

Plumes of smoke and ash were sent 10,000 feet into the air after the sudden eruption on Sunday.

Officials have already prevented residents from going within two miles of the crater’s mouth because of potential lava.

Abdul Malik, head of Padang Search and Rescue Agency, said: ‘There are 26 people who have not been evacuated, we have found 14 of them, three were found alive and 11 were found dead.’

The clouds of ash spread several miles and blocked out the sun for some small villages, according to National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari.

Marapi has remained at the third highest level of alerts, Mr Muhari said.

Indonesia sits in the Pacific ‘ring of fire’, and has over 120 active volcanoes.

Earlier this year, Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano erupted, spewing ash as high as two miles into the air, officials said.

Anak Krakatoa, which means ‘child of Kratakoa’, first emerged following the massive eruption at Krakatoa in 1883, which triggered a period of global cooling.
