A person has been killed and one other injured in an attack on a street in central Paris.

An assailant targeted ‘passers-by’ in the Quai de Grenelle area of France’s capital, according to interior minister Gérald Darmanin.

He said the attacker has been arrested and the injured person was being treated by emergency services.

The attack happed by the Bir Hakeim bridge, which runs across the Seine River, near the Eiffel Tower.

People have been asked to avoid the area.

Mr Darmanin wrote on X: ‘The police have just courageously arrested an assailant attacking passers-by in Paris, around the Quai de Grenelle.

‘One deceased person and one injured person treated by the Paris Fire Brigade. Please avoid the area.’

Police said the person killed was a tourist with dual German and Filipino nationality.

A knife and hammer were used in the attack, according to local media reports.

‘The assailant was neutralised very quickly by police,’ Dr Patrick Pelloux told BFM TV.

‘We tried to save the life of this man. It’s a man who died and they (the people who were attacked) were tourists.’
