Girl arrested for murdering Brianna Ghey asked ‘is it because I saw her last?’ | UK News
One of the teenagers accused of murdering Brianna Ghey asked a police officer as she was arrested: ‘Is it because I was the last person to see her alive?’
The teenager, who was 15 at the time and has been identified as girl X, was arrested the day after Brianna, 16, was found stabbed 28 times in Culcheth Linear Park, Warrington, on February 11.
Girl X and another teen identified as boy Y, also 15 at the time, were traced after being seen with Brianna that day – and after girl X’s mother phoned police, Manchester Crown Court was told.
Both X and Y, both now 16, deny murder and are blaming each other.
In the call to police by girl X’s mother at around 5pm on the day following Brianna’s death, the teen told police she and Y had been with Brianna in the park, but Briana had then ‘gone off with a Manchester boy who owned a car’.
Two-and-a-half hours later, both defendants were arrested at their homes by Cheshire Police.
Today, jurors were shown the body-worn camera footage taken when officers donning balaclavas and body armour detained the teens.
In the footage, girl X was seen standing at the top of the stairs as police constable Chris Rigby told her: ‘Listen to what I have to say. From the information I have received, you are under arrest on suspicion of the murder of Brianna Ghey yesterday.’
As the girl’s arms were handcuffed behind her back, one officer was heard saying: ‘Be careful. She has got really small wrists.’
Officers then asked for her cell phone and password, and she nodded as she asked if she knew what was happening.
Girl X asked the officer: ‘How come I’m a suspect? Is it because I was the last person to see her alive?’
Jurors were then shown footage of the arrest of boy Y, as he knelt outside his bedroom and said: ‘I can explain.’
Earlier the jury was shown footage of boy Y getting the bus home after the stabbing.
Prosecutor Deanna Heer said boy Y’s browsing history showed him accessing sites with advice on breathing exercises for stress and getting help for anxiety after Brianna’s death.
Later, girl X sent a message to boy Y reading: ‘Do you know what my favourite quote is? If you wish for peace, prepare for war.’
She asked: ‘Do you have anxiety about getting caught?’
Boy Y replied: ‘Probably.’
Earlier this week, the harrowing 999 call made by a dog walker who found the body of Brianna was played to Manchester Court.
The call was made by Kathryn Vize, who had been walking her dog with husband Andrew when they came across the dying 16-year-old in a wooded path.
The trial continues.
