The Met Office has revealed which areas of the UK are likely to get some snow in the coming days, as a sharp cold snap hits the country.

Weather warnings for snow and ice will cover the north-east of England as well as eastern and northern Scotland at different times of day today.

We’re currently in the midst of one yellow warning which came into effect at 5pm yesterday and lasts until 11am tomorrow – so some places may be waking up to snow this morning.

Then, at 5pm this evening, another snow and ice yellow warning will arrive to cover much of the east coast north of Hull and stay there until 11am tomorrow.

Met Office forecasters say rain and snow will lead to ‘icy patches and hazardous conditions’, causing particular issues for roads and railways.

People should also take care when walking on untreated pavements due to ice patches, with some injuries possible from slips and falls.

Yesterday, the National Grid said it was preparing to pay some households to use less energy after the current cold snap has forced them to activate their blackout prevention scheme.

Neil Armstrong (the Met Office meteorologist, not the first man on the moon) said certain parts are more likely to get a blanket of snow than others.

He said: ‘There has been some uncertainty in the atmospheric weather patterns for the coming days, however, confidence in the forecast is improving and there is a reducing chance of snow for southern areas of the UK, although there is still a chance we may see some sleety wintry showers over higher ground in areas such as Dartmoor or Exmoor.

‘Northern and northeastern areas of the UK in the moist north/northeasterly airflow continue to see a chance of snow or sleet and yellow snow and ice National Severe Weather Warnings have been issued.’

The UK Health Security Agency has put out its own Cold-Health Alerts for the coming week, warning that ‘significant impacts are probably across the health and social care sector due to forecast weather conditions’.

North-east and north-west England are under an amber alert along with Yorkshire and the Humber.

The East and West Midlands have also been put under a less severe yellow Cold-Health Alert.
