The first transatlantic flight by a large passenger aircraft using pure sustainable aviation fuel (Saf) has taken off from London’s Heathrow Airport.

Regulators had previously only permitted carriers to use up to 50% eco-fuel to power engines.

But Virgin Atlantic’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner will fly to New York JFK powered purely by Saf – comprising mostly used cooking oil and plant-based products.
