If you were shivering in your bed last night, you probably weren’t alone.

Last night was the coldest night of autumn 2023 so far – with the lowest temperature of the night reported in Shap, Cumbria at a very chilly -7.7°C.

Last night was the coldest night of the year so far for England, Wales and Northern Ireland – only Scotland has seen a chillier night so far in 2023, the Met Office said.

It’s thought the Arctic blast which has caused this sudden drop in temperature could stick around for another two weeks, until around December 10.

After that, it’s thought milder, wetter and windier weather will push in from the west and north west.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, Dan Harris, told MailOnline: ‘Early next week we expect to see a return to widely cold but quiet conditions.

‘Some showers are likely to affect some parts of the east coast, and these could turn increasingly wintry over higher ground areas towards the middle of the week.’

It’s thought temperatures will return to ‘near or above average overall’ as the festive period approaches – but this doesn’t rule out a white Christmas.

The Met Office has said this rise in temperatures ‘doesn’t rule out some spells of cold weather and associated wintry hazards’.
