When is snow coming to the UK? Met Office gives verdict | UK News

A blast of cold arctic air is likely to sweep the UK this week, bringing the possibility of snow in some areas, weather forecasters say.

Temperatures are expected to hold steady until Thursday, though higher winds will ‘make it feel colder than recent days’, according to the Met Office.

A ‘reasonably strong signal’ has been detected for a downturn on Friday, bringing yet more showers in Scotland and north-east England that could fall as sleet and snow over hills.

‘There is a 70 per cent chance that areas as far south as southern England could experience overnight frosts and a general reduction in temperature,’ Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Helen Caughey said.

‘Any falling snow is likely to be confined to the far northeast, and hills and mountains of Scotland.’

The cold snap ‘isn’t guaranteed, and those lower temperatures don’t mean widespread snow,’ Ms Caughey added.

After a mid-week spell of 10°C-12°C weather across England and Wales, the mercury is forecast to drop suddenly.

By late on Friday night, most central and eastern parts of the UK are expected to be plunged into 3°C temperatures, with Wales and south-west England experiencing lows of 7°C.

By the end of the week, lows of 1°C are forecast for the West Midlands, while much of northern and southern England is expected to hover between 2°C and 3°C.

The Met Office expects northerly chill winds to continue ‘generally, but not consistently’ into next week.

‘The heaviest and most frequent showers are expected to fall in north areas, and they have the potential to turn wintry in places, with snow possible on higher ground,’ a spokesperson added.

‘As we look ahead into the start of December a more settled period of weather could develop for a time in the south of the UK, and given the time of year, this may well be associated with overnight frost and fog.

‘The weather is expected to be more changeable further north.’

Forecasters say wintry showers could spread more widely across northern Englandand Scotland toward the end of next week.
