Woman with two wombs pregnant in both after miracle conception | Tech News
A woman born with two uteruses has become pregnant in both after a ‘one in 50 million’ miracle – and the babies are due to be born at Christmas.
Kelsey Hatcher, a 32-year-old massage therapist from Alabama, discovered she had ‘uterus didelphys’ when she was 17.
This rare condition causes women to have a double uterus and affects roughly 0.3% of women.
Kelsey discovered the unexpected dual pregnancy during an eight-week ultrasound visit in May.
Kelsey and her husband Caleb are now braced for Cesarean sections for at least one of the babies – or both.
The mother-of-three documents her story on the Instagram account ‘doubleuhatchlings’.
She wrote: ‘We were kind of blown away! During that first ultrasound we had LOTS of laughs.’
Kelsey is hoping to give birth naturally to Baby A and Baby B, whom she refers to as ‘the girlies’.
Both of Kelsey’s uteruses will contract at different times which could be minutes, hours or even days apart.
She wrote: ‘They like to tell me at every doctor’s visit that “You are aware, we’ve never had a situation like this before, this is a new case for us altogether’’…But I feel like I have the best team for this situation and I’m at the best hospital at Alabama for what’s going on.’
So what’s behind the Christmas miracle pregnancy?
Shweta Patel, the obstetrician-gynecologist caring for Hatcher at the University of Alabama’s Birmingham’s Women & Infants Center, speculated about the incredible journey of husband Caleb’s lucky sperm on ABC’s Good Morning America.
She said: ‘Most likely what happened is that she ovulated separately and had one egg come down each fallopian tube, meaning coming down on each side of the uterus, and then sperm travelled up on each separate uterus and fertilization occurred separately.’
Although women with a double uterus often face pregnancy complications, all three of Hatcher’s previous children were born healthy at full term.
Hatcher said the chance of falling pregnant in both uteruses was just 1 in 50 million.
Earlier this year, another mum born with two gave birth to twins, conceiving one baby through IVF in one uterus and the other baby naturally.
Madeline Kaklikos, 24, and her husband, Jon, 27, welcomed their miracle twin boys, Cole and Nate, in February following ten rounds of fertility treatment over three years.
