New foreign secretary David Cameron has flown out to Kyiv for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky just four days into his job.

The newly minted Lord Cameron shook hands with the war leader, before the pair discussed the supply of weapons for the war against Russian invaders.

In a post on social media, Zelensky wrote: ‘We had a good meeting focused on weapons for the frontline, strengthening air defence, and protecting our people and critical infrastructure.

‘I am grateful to the UK for its support!’

Cameron is the third British prime minister Zelensky has met in Kyiv. Liz Truss accepted an invitation to visit on her first day as leader, but circumstances soon overtook her.

The trip to Ukraine was scheduled to take place with previous foreign secretary James Cleverly before he was moved to the Home Office in Monday’s reshuffle.
