Teen girl riding a horse is hit by a train along a trail | US News
A teenage girl riding her horse on a trail was hit by a train while crossing a railroad.
The 14-year-old girl was on horseback in Richland County, North Dakota, when a Canadian Pacific train struck them around 4.20pm on Sunday, Valley News Live reported.
They collided at a railroad crossing, stated a Richland County Sheriff’s Office crash report.
The horse died at the scene, while the girl was airlifted to a hospital in Fargo in critical condition.
Doctors put the girl in an induced coma after she broke her clavicle, fibula and tibia, and she underwent a three-hour surgery. The girl also suffered a concussion and the severity of her head injury was not immediately known, her mother said.
The train hit the horse and the girl at an intersection near 88th Street and 165th Avenue, roughly three miles southeast of the small rural town of Mantador.
No one on the train was injured and it was not damaged.
The teen’s identity was not immediately released.
Agencies that responded to the crash included the sheriff’s office, Mantador Fire Department, Hankinson Ambulance and Breckenridge/Wahpeton Ambulance.
Some social media users speculated that the horse may have gotten ‘spooked’ by the train noises or whistle, the Daily Mail reported. Spooked horses can jump, rear or bolt and flee as fast as they can from the source of their fright.
