Crowds rush to NatWest ATM after it starts giving out ‘double the cash’ | UK News

A glitch at a cash machine meant a swarm of customers were handed ‘double the money’ they asked for.
Dozens of people rushed to the NatWest machine in East Ham, east London after footage of the ATM issue was shared online.
The machine suffered a ‘one-off manual error’ the bank said, meaning that ‘a number of transactions at one ATM dispensed more cash than the requested amount.’
It later said the ATM had been fixed and customers could use it again as normal.
Just over a month ago, NatWest customers said they had gone overdrawn because of an issue with its cash deposit machines – with some worried they would be charged fees.
Several people said that recently-deposited cash was not showing up in their balance.

In August, technical faults at the Bank of Ireland allowed people to withdraw funds despite having little or no money in their accounts.
Large queues formed at many cash machines in the Republic of Ireland after word of the glitch spread.
Posts on social media later appeared to show police officers deployed to ATMS.
However the incident from last night has now been resolved, the bank said.
In footage shared on X (previously Twitter) large groups of customers can be seen huddled around the machine in east London.
One man commentating over the top says that one of the machines is giving out ‘double cash’ claiming out twice the amount of cash that customers were requesting.
It is unclear whether customers were then charged the double amount or if they were actually handed the cash without any extra charges.
NatWest has been contacted for further confirmation.
A NatWest spokesperson said: ‘Due to a one-off manual error, a number of transactions at one ATM dispensed more cash than the requested amount.
‘This has since been fixed and customers can use this ATM as normal.’
