A woman in Australia was seriously hurt after being bitten on the head by a shark.

The 32-year-old suffered ‘extremely serious head injuries’ in the terrifying attack by Port Noarlunga Jetty, which lies just south of Adelaide.

Witnesses say she was free diving at the time it happened, according to 9News.

After being treated by paramedics on the beach, the woman was taken to hospital where she is said to be in a non-life threatening condition.

In footage taken after the attack, bystanders can be seen holding up plastic sheets for privacy.

Beachgoers, meanwhile, spoke of their shock.

One woman told the Advertiser: ‘I looked up to see this women basically wrapped in tarp… there was blood on the side of her head.

‘When they brought her up to the ambulance, you could see there was a lot of blood. No one knew it was a shark attack.’

Some children said they had seen the shark grab the woman by the head.

‘Some of the kids did see it, we’ve been talking to a few of them and they saw her face all bloodied,’ swimmer Mason Corbett told 9News.

In a statement, police said that with help of other emergency services theyevacuated the water ‘while a search to locate the shark was undertaken’.

‘Members of the public have since returned to the water after the search failed to locate the shark,’ they added.

The attack comes just a week after a surfer, Ted Gendle, was killed by a great white shark, near Streaky Bay which is also in the state of South Australia.

That was the second death in South Australia this year after teacher Simon Baccanello, 46, was killed by a shark near Elliston in May.

And earlier this month a woman was mauled by a great white shark twice off Beachport, again in South Australia, but survived.

Last year a British man became the first person to be killed by a shark in Sydney in 59 years.

Simon Nellist, 35, was an experienced ocean swimmer who was training for a charity swim when he was attacked metres from Buchan Point, near Little Bay.
