Texas chemical plant explosion sparks shelter in place warning | US News

A chemical plant in Texas exploded and ignited a fire that sent a massive plume of black smoke into the sky.
The explosion in Shepherd on Wednesday morning caused the evacuation of a private school on Farm-to-Market Road 1127, said the San Jacinto County Office of Emergency Management.
‘All other residence living in a five mile radius around this location should shelter in place at this time,’ wrote the agency on Facebook.
The plume of smoke was moving towards Livingston, according to Polk County Emergency Management Office, which advised locals to shelter in place and turn off all heating and ventilation systems.
‘At this time, the effects of the chemical in the air are unknown,’ said Polk County officials.
No information was immediately provided on whether there were any injuries or the cause of the explosion.
Shepherd is located about 60 miles north of Houston.
