The family of a 15-year-old who was run over while walking to school have paid tribute to their ‘kind, happy, and funny boy’.
Freddie Coleman was hit by a car in the rural village of Stock in Essex on Friday morning, and a second teenage boy was airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.
In a statement released today, Freddie’s parents Jason and Jo said: ‘Our beautiful boy Freddie, a much-loved son, grandson, brother, nephew and uncle sadly died on November 3 at 8.30am.
‘He was loved by everybody who knew him, our kind, happy, funny boy. Please respect our privacy during this dreadful time.’
A 23-year-old man who was arrested after the incident on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving while unfit through drink or drugs has been released, pending further investigation.
The two children attended Mayflower High School in Billericay, only a mile and a half from the scene of the horror accident.
Pupils and mourners have laid floral tributes in front of the school, along with letters and candles spelling out Freddie’s name.
The school has said it is a ‘difficult time’ for the community as they mourn his loss.
In a Tweet, they said: ‘Should students, staff, or members of the public wish to leave any flowers then they are welcome to. There is a memorial of flowers by our sign at the front of the school.
‘We will also have a book of condolence available in main reception should you wish to leave a message.’
One note left by the school entrance read: ‘Fred, you were always the light in lessons. You made sure everyone had a good laugh. We all miss you so much. Fly high.’
Police said their investigation is progressing and they’ve appealed to witnesses to the accident and those with dashcam footage to reach out.
Witnesses can submit a report online to Essex Police here, or call 101 citing crime incident 218 of November 3.
Detective inspector Mark Fraser said: ‘This tragic incident has had a huge impact on the community.
‘Our detectives are carrying out a number of enquiries, including reviewing dashcam footage and CCTV to determine the circumstances around this collision.’
