Petrol bombs thrown at Edinburgh riot police on Bonfire Night | UK News
Violence has erupted in Edinburgh where youths attacked police with petrol bombs.
People had gathered for Bonfire Night when celebrations took a twisted turn and some began lighting fireworks in all directions.
Specialist officers were deployed to tackle ‘significant’ antisocial use of fireworks in Hay Avenue.
A row of police in riot gear with their shields raised were spotted lining up against the backdrop of fireworks.
Footage shared on social media showed several youngsters charging toward them before being forced to run back.
Loud bangs and screams could be heard in the background, while fireworks could be seen travelling in all kinds of directions.
Police Scotland confirmed that Specialist Public Order resources were sent to the area as part of Operation Moonbeam, launched in response to the high levels of public disorder.
A statement on Twitter read: ‘Officers are being attacked with fireworks, petrol bombs and other projectiles.
‘Some local roads are closed. Please avoid the area for the time-being while we respond.’
The attacks first began at around 4.40pm today and it is understood officers are still failing to contain the disorder.
