Mum-of-3 shot dead by estranged husband days before divorce finalized | US News
A married mother-of-three was shot to death by her estranged husband just days before their divorce was set to be finalized.
Nityadevi Ramroop, 35, got home from work around 11pm on Halloween night and was shot by her husband in the driveway while her children were inside the home, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Ramroop had been afraid it would happen as their divorce trial approached, said her lawyer Uchi Ohia.
‘Her increasing fear was the trial coming up, that he would do something to harm her,’ Ohia told KTRK. ‘She was being told by his friends that he was saying some very alarming things.’
Ramroop’s husband then tried to break into the home in Houston, Texas, and stabbed his wife’s 25-year-old sister, investigators said.
Cops later found the man a mile-and-a-half away from the home dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Ramroop called police several times to try to protect herself and her kids but was told they could not do anything, Ohia said.
‘I had advised her to inform the police that she believed he was following her,’ the lawyer said.
‘There were multiple incidents where she was fearful this man was stalking her.
‘They told her on a couple of occasions, and myself, since he did not commit a crime, that there was nothing they can actually do to prosecute him and if he did do anything that would constitute a crime in their eyes.’
A friend of Ramroop who did not want her identity disclosed told Fox 26 that she had children aged seven, 13 and 16.
A neighbor, Rudy Almarez, said he was woken up on Tuesday night by gunshots and police.
‘They came over here this morning and they washed the blood off the driveway and everything,’ Almarez told the news outlet. ‘They didn’t want the kids to see it.’
Ramroop’s sister was rushed to a hospital and is expected to survive, according to Sgt Greg Pinkins of the sheriff’s office homicide unit.
The victim had reported to deputies that her estranged husband was following her in June but no charges were ultimately filed, according to the sheriff’s office.
Ramroop’s lawyer said she showed great strength trying to find help and escape the situation.
