Judge and clerk in Trump fraud trial called to stop ‘eye rolls’ | US News
Ex-President Donald Trump’s lawyer called out the judge and clerk in his fraud trial for ‘eye rolls’ and other ‘incredibly distracting’ behavior.
Trump’s defense attorney Alina Habba requested that Judge Arthur Engoron’s court staff refrain from certain gestures, highlighting the tension between them in the courtroom.
‘It is incredibly distracting when there are eye rolls and constant whispering at the bench,’ said Habba in New York Supreme Court on Wednesday morning.
Engoron replied: ‘OK, granted.’
His clerk, Allison Greenfield, did not visibly react to the request.
Earlier in the civil fraud trial, Trump posted a photo of Greenfield posing with Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and labeled her ‘Schumer’s girlfriend’. That led to Engoron issuing a limited gag order prohibiting all actorsin the case from smearing his staff.
Habba’s request put on the record that Trump’s team believes Engoron or his staffmay be acting in a biased way.
She made it just before Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen returned for his second day on the witness stand. The cross-examination on Tuesday was heated, with Cohen objecting to some of Habba’s questions, which he was not supposed to do.
