A person was shot and killed by police officers after climbing on to the roof of a middle school filled with around 70 students.

Around 6.30pm on Monday night, police officers in Germantown, Wisconsin responded to reports of a suspect ‘acting erratically’ in the parking lot of Kennedy Middle School.

‘Upon arrival of law enforcement, the subject was able to climb onto the roof of the school and two officers pursued on foot,’ the Wisconsin Department of Justice said.

When the two officers arrived on the roof, the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire. The two cops returned fire on the roof, and a third officer returned fire from the ground.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and injured. Officers attempted to provide first aid, but they were later declared dead at the scene.

The suspect has not yet been identified by law enforcement, and it is unclear if they were connected to the middle school.

Meanwhile, the school below was locked down for over two hours after the shooting.

Kennedy Middle School has a total enrollment of 898 students, but most had already gone home from classes for the day. About 50-70 students were still in the building for after school extracurricular activities.

After the lockdown was lifted, the students were bussed to a nearby elementary school and reunited with their parents.

The Department of Justice said the shooting was an isolated incident and there was no ongoing threat to the public of the students at Kennedy Middle School.

‘All interactions with the subject occurred outside of the building,’ the department said.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

The three officers involved have been placed on administrative leave until the results of a critical incident investigation by an outside agency, as required by Department of Justice policy.
