A pedestrian has been flown to hospital in a helicopter after they were struck by a lorry on a motorway in Somerset.

The extent of the patient’s injuries following the incident, which took place on the M5 near Taunton just after midday today, are not currently known.

Traffic reached a standstill earlier today as vehicles were asked to find alternative routes while the air ambulance landed on the carriageway near junction 25.

There were reportedly delays of more than an hour as people travelling both north and south on the motorway were diverted.

The road was reopened at around 2.30pm, but delays continue.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed one patient had been taken to hospital but did not give any more details about the incident.

A spokesman said: ‘The M5 was closed at junction 25 (Taunton) following a collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry that happened at about noon today.

‘An air ambulance landed at the scene to take the injured pedestrian to hospital.

‘The road reopened at about 2.40pm but motorists are advised there are delays in both directions.’
