Police confront man who drove into Chinese consulate armed with crossbow, knife | US News
Police in San Francisco have released video footage showing the moment officers confronted a man who smashed his car into the Chinese Consulate.
The terrifying attack took place on October 10 at the consulate located in San Francisco’s scenic Japantown neighborhood.
The assailant was identified as Zhanyuan Yang, a 31-year-old Chinese citizen. He was armed with a crossbow, arrows, and a 3 1/2 inch knife that he swung at officers attempting to subdue him.
Body-worn camera footage from officers responding to the terrifying scene was released by the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) during a town hall meeting held on Thursday evening.
Police rushed to the scene around 3.00pm that afternoon after receiving multiple 911 calls, including several from people who believed Yang was armed with a gun.
The footage, which begins shortly after Yang rammed his Honda Civic into the lobby, shows consulate security guards struggling to subdue him after using pepper spray.
SFPD Sergeant Troy Carrasco was the first officer to enter the consulate, and immediately attempted to help security guards detain Yang.
‘The sergeant approached Mr Yang and ordered him to get on the ground, but he did not comply,’ SFPD Commander Mark Im said.
‘I will never surrender,’ Yang can be heard shouting as he struggles with the officer.
During the commotion, Carrasco can be heard shouting ‘Does he have a gun?’
‘Mr Yang made multiple rapid, downward swinging motions with the knife towards the direction of the sergeant and the security guard,’ Commander Im said.
Moments later, Carrasco drew his service weapon and fired. Yang was taken to a hospital, where he died from his wounds.
Police did not comment on Yang’s possible motivation for the chaotic attack. Witnesses at the consulate said they heard him yell, ‘Where’s the f—–g CCP?’
CCP is a common abbreviation for the Chinese Communist Party.
