Poundland has announced that nine former Wilko shops will reopen this weekend.

The former Wilko branches – which shut after the bargain brand went into administration earlier this year – will open their doors again on Saturday, October 21.

Poundland parent company Pepco bought up 71 Wilko stores during the administration process, but no offer was large enough to save the entire business or its staff.

They’ve already reopened 28 former Wilko stores in the last three weeks – so these latest branches take the total to 37.

The new shops will sell grocery, household and general merchandise found in all Poundland shops, as well as Pepco clothing which is currently being rolled out to all of their more than 500 existing shops.

All of the former Wilko shops will receive another makeover next year, to become fully operational Poundland shops.

Two existing branches will also relocate into new sites this weekend. Poundland in Brentwood, Essex will move from the High Street to the Bay Tree Centre, and in Worksop, Nottinghamshire it will move to a different unit in the Priory Shopping Centre.

Poundland’s retail director Darren Kay said: ‘We’re proud that to date, we’re the only retailer that’s delivered on its promise to re-open Wilko stores and offer roles to their people.

‘In four short weeks we’ll have opened 37 Wilko stores – an amazing achievement by hundreds of colleagues right across our Poundland business.

‘The team that’s making this happen are part of something very special – protecting jobs, keeping high streets alive and serving many new communities.

‘I’d like to thank them for all the hard work that’s making sure these former Wilko stores begin their new Poundland journeys in such good shape.

‘While more extensive refits will be scheduled for the new year, we look forward to welcoming customers old and new to their new stores this weekend.’
