The body of a 77-year-old man who was swept into the River Tay after horrific flooding in Scotland has been found.

Police said the discovery was made at about 12.25pm near Haugh Island, Logierait in Tayside, nearly a week after he fell into the water.

Struan Robertson was trying to clear a hydropower device in Perthshire when he lost his footing.

The body has still to be formally identified, but police said Mr Robertson’s family has been informed.

More bad weather is expected this weekend across the north of Scotland.

A spokesperson said: ‘There would appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.’

Heavy rain and flooding was seen in parts of Scotland, including Perthshire, last weekend.

Mr Robertson’s son Euan told The Courier newspaper that his father had been dragged away by the current in front of his wife on Sunday.

Speaking outside the family home on Tuesday, Mr Robertson said: ‘He was trying to clear a hydro intake from the Tay. It powers the electricity but it gets clogged up when the water is so high.

‘He lost his footing and was swept into the river. The current dragged him away.

‘I was in Perth at the time. My mother was with him when it happened.’
